Feeder league watch
Which leagues are feeding players into the CHL?
The big question is no longer only whether the CHL is open to NCAA-minded players. It is where CHL teams are finding those players. The Dan K Show's public NCAA and CHL Recruiting Battleground Tracker shows American players in the CHL rising from 100 in 2024-25 to 217 in 2025-26. For a broader feeder-league view, Neutral Zone's CHL Commitments table helps show which leagues are producing those moves. The Dan K Show의 공개 NCAA and CHL Recruiting Battleground Tracker는 CHL 내 미국 선수 수가 2024-25 시즌 100명에서 2025-26 시즌 217명으로 증가했음을 보여줍니다.

In the broader Neutral Zone commitments table, the USHL still stands out clearly. We counted 35 de-duplicated USHL entries among players committed to CHL teams. The data should not stop the conversation there, though. Junior A leagues are visible throughout the table: BCHL, GOJHL, OJHL, AJHL, CCHL, and MJHL combine for 29 entries. That makes the Junior A group a meaningful part of the CHL recruiting picture, not a footnote.
This matters because the NCAA rule change altered the incentives. Before August 1, 2025, playing major junior generally meant giving up NCAA Division I hockey. Now, CHL players can remain NCAA DI eligible if they are not paid above actual and necessary expenses. That makes the CHL a direct competitor for players who previously might have stayed in the USHL, BCHL, NAHL, prep hockey, or top youth programs to protect their NCAA options.
What Korean families should take from this한국 가정이 이 변화에서 읽어야 할 점
The takeaway is that the feeder map is broader than one league. If a player is good enough to draw USHL, BCHL, NAHL, CCHL, OJHL, GOJHL, AJHL, or other strong Junior A interest, CHL teams may enter the conversation earlier than families expect. The league name alone is not enough. Families should ask which CHL league is recruiting from that pathway and whether the move improves the player's development, visibility, school plan, and NCAA timing.
Bottom line: the USHL is still the clearest single feeder-league signal, but Junior A belongs in the same conversation. The CHL is now recruiting directly from several leagues families have viewed as NCAA-safe development paths.
What impressed us most at our Korea hockey camp
Freddy Meyer and I recently wrapped up a successful clinic in Seoul, South Korea, with our Korean partner, Coach Yuwon Lee. The camp worked well in many ways, but the biggest success was not simply that players worked hard or improved over the week. What mattered most was that Freddy introduced a different kind of clinic: one focused less on isolated hockey mechanics and more on situational decision-making under pressure.
From the first day, one thing was immediately clear: Korean players are skilled. Their skating, passing, shooting, and puck-handling mechanics were strong. The technical foundation was there.
The challenge appeared when the game sped up. When players were put into tighter spaces, under heavier pressure, and against more physical defenders, many became too quick to get rid of the puck. That is not unique to Korean players. We see the same pattern in North America. When pressure rises, players often stop reading the game and start trying to survive the moment.
Freddy's real coaching pointFreddy
Freddy's message to the players was simple: at higher levels, the question is not only “Can you skate, pass, shoot, and handle the puck?” The question becomes: “Can you still make a good decision when the game is faster, the space is tighter, and the competition is more physical?”Freddy가 선수들에게 전한 메시지는 분명했습니다.
The Korean athletes impressed us in ways that were familiar but still powerful to see up close. They were disciplined. They were coachable. They worked hard. Once Freddy taught players how to slow the game down, feel more confident with the puck, protect it, and wait for better options, their decision-making and hockey IQ improved significantly the following day.
The defensive group also took a major step forward. As they implemented Freddy's tips, they played more physically and applied pressure more effectively. That mattered for the whole camp. Better defensive pressure created the competitive environment the forwards needed. It forced forwards to protect the puck, stay composed, and create better opportunities instead of rushing a low-value play.
Just as important, the hospitality, warmth, and love the Korean hockey community showed us left a lasting impression. We left Seoul grateful, energized, and excited to help this new generation of Korean hockey athletes make a name for themselves in North America.
That is the value Korean athletes need next: not more repetition for repetition’s sake, but more game-like pressure, more confidence with the puck, and more training that teaches players how to think when the game becomes uncomfortable. See you next summer.
College funding
NCAA hockey funding: D1, D2, D3, and NIL in plain EnglishNCAA
Korean families often ask the wrong first question: “Is Division 2 better than Division 3?” In hockey, the better question is: “How does this school support athletes financially, and what will the real cost to the family be?”
The primary distinction between D2 and D3 is not automatically the quality of hockey. There are excellent D3 programs and less competitive programs at higher labels. The practical distinction is funding structure. Division 2 schools can offer athletic scholarships. Division 3 schools cannot offer athletic scholarships, but they can still reduce cost through need-based aid, merit scholarships, international student aid, grants, and school-specific financial packages.D2와 D3의 핵심 차이는 자동으로 실력 차이가 아닙니다. Division 3 학교는 athletic scholarship을 줄 수 없지만, need-based aid, merit scholarship, international student aid, grant, 학교별 financial package를 통해 비용을 낮출 수 있습니다.
Division IDivision I
The highest visibility level. Some schools are heavily funded, but not every roster spot is a full scholarship. Under the new settlement era, schools have more flexibility, but families still need to ask what is actually being offered.
Division IIDivision II
D2 can award athletic scholarship money, often as partial aid. In hockey, D2 is not simply “between D1 and D3” in skill. It is a different funding and school-fit conversation.D2는 athletic scholarship을 줄 수 있고, 많은 경우 partial aid 형태입니다.
Division IIIDivision III
D3 cannot give athletic scholarships. That does not mean no funding. Strong academic profile, family financial need, and institutional priorities can still create meaningful aid.D3는 athletic scholarship을 줄 수 없습니다.
Where NIL fitsNIL
NIL means name, image, and likeness. It is separate from scholarship and financial aid. A player may earn money for real promotional work, camps, appearances, social media, or local business partnerships, but families should not treat NIL as guaranteed tuition funding. For most hockey players, especially international players, NIL is a possible bonus, not the financial plan.NIL은 name, image, likeness를 뜻합니다.
Bottom line: do not judge a college hockey opportunity by division label alone. Ask for the real package: athletic money, academic merit aid, need-based aid, housing costs, international student rules, NIL expectations, and the final annual family cost.
NCAA DI eligibility: junior hockey after 19 needs a tighter planNCAA D1 자격: 19세 이후 Junior Hockey는 더 신중한 계획이 필요합니다
The NCAA Division I eligibility model is changing for athletes who first enroll full time in college in fall 2027 or later. The simple point: junior hockey is no longer something families should treat as an open-ended runway.2027년 가을 이후 대학에 처음 풀타임 등록하는 선수부터 NCAA Division I 자격 모델이 바뀝니다.
Under the new age-based rule, a five-year eligibility period can start around the academic year after a player turns 19, even if the player is still in junior hockey. Once it starts, it keeps running.
Do not plan multiple junior seasons after 19 without checking the college enrollment timeline.19세 이후 여러 시즌의 Junior Hockey를 계획하기 전에 대학 등록 시점을 확인해야 합니다.
A PG year or junior season can still make sense, but it needs a specific purpose.PG year
School, club, junior, and college timing should now be planned together earlier.
Confirm individual cases with the NCAA Eligibility Center and college compliance office.
Bottom line: the question is no longer only “Can this player play juniors?” It is “How much NCAA eligibility will be left when college starts?”
